Many people are hesitant to use corporate rates because they fear that they will be required to show identification at check-in to confirm their eligibility. However, in my experience, this is not always the case. While some people on online forums suggest that an ID is necessary, I have found that it is primarily an ethical issue. If you are not eligible for a specific rate, it is a matter of personal and professional ethics to determine whether or not you should use it.

Throughout my career, I have enjoyed corporate rates at hotels in a variety of capacities, including as an employee of the company that negotiated the rate and as a contractor, supplier, or customer of the company. In most cases, I did not have any form of identification, and the details of my relationship with the company were often confidential. However, I was still able to book rooms using the corporate rate without being asked for further information.

In fact, I have only been asked for a form of corporate identification less than 10% of the time I have booked a corporate rate. When I am an employee, I typically show my business card, but when I am a contractor or supplier, I simply state my position. The receptionist at the hotel does not require any further details.

Hotels are primarily concerned with occupancy and profitability, and they are happy to fill rooms with discounted rates, even for corporate clients. Corporate clients book directly with the hotel, saving the hotel commissions typically paid to travel websites. However, hotels may not accept corporate codes when they anticipate being fully booked during holidays or large conventions.

While I do not condone using corporate rates you are not eligible for, it is important to understand that eligibility is not limited to company employees. Contractors, consultants, suppliers, and customers may also be eligible for corporate rates. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether or not to use a corporate rate, based on your personal and professional ethics.
